ELK GROVE, CA – While water industry experts were meeting in Sacramento last week, select members came to the Elk Grove Water Service Railroad Water Treatment and Storage facility to examine the state-of-the-art facility in operation.

Members of the California-Nevada section of the American Water Works Association came to area to learn the latest trends in the industry. Part of their training included a tour and discussion of how the Elk Grove Water Service had effectively addressed the iron and manganese levels in the groundwater. Attendees also learned how new state regulations for arsenic removal were anticipated and addressed in advance – saving millions of dollars in retrofit fees.

Elk Grove Water Service District Engineer, Scott Myers explains the one-of-kind system that saves the district over approximately 44 million gallons of water each year.

"It was an exceptional honor to have our plant selected as an example of effective water treatment," said Leo Havener, general manager of the Elk Grove Water Service. "We were one of only three sites selected out of the entire Northern California region."

Attendees were impressed with the smart, efficient design as well as how this translated into a facility that cost about half as much as comparable water treatment plants.

A key feature of the facility is a one-of-kind system that allows the plant to reclaim 99.4% of the water used to clean the plant’s large filters. This system saves the water service approximately $40,000 a year in wastewater fees and saves approximately 44 million gallons of water each year.

"The American Water Works Association is the leader in safe water and the best practices for water districts," said Havener. "Having them decide to showcase our facility and operations team is an very positive indication of what we have been able to do here in Elk Grove."

Water from the Elk Grove Water Service Railroad Water Treatment and Storage Facility is currently being provided to about half of the customers who will ultimately be served by the plant. The final pipelines that will provide water to these customers are currently under construction and will be completed by the end of 2008.
